Using Google Translate for multi language projects

Translating foreign languages into English can be extremely expensive if done manually. Here are some quick hacks to help you!

Google Translate can be used for free on Indeemo in 2 ways to understand what is happening day to day on multi language projects.

  1. Right click, select ‘Translate to English’ when Indeemo Dashboard is open on Google Chrome

  2. Use the GOOGLETRANSLATE formula to convert any language into any other language in Google Sheets.

Using Google Translate in the Indeemo dashboard

This video shows you how if you ‘right click’ on the Indeemo Dashboard while in Google Chrome, you can select ‘Translate to English’ and use it to translate captions, comments and video transcripts for foreign language projects on the Indeemo Dashboard.

Note: this only translates the text within your browser and is not searchable or downloadable.

Scroll down further for tips on using the googletranslate formula in Google Sheets.

Using the GOOGLETRANSLATE formula in Google Sheets

On Indeemo, you can export the meta data of all Respondent upload into Excel spreadsheets (csv files).

These files will be saved to the Downloads folder on your computer.

To translate the one language into another, follow these steps (you will need a Gmail account and access to Google Sheets to do this).

1 - Go to Google Sheets.

2 - Start a new spreadsheet.

3 - Go to File > Import. Choose the Upload option and browse for the Indeemo export in your Downloads folder

4 - When this is uploaded, insert a column to the right of the column which contains the foreign language you wish to translate

5 - in this new column use the following formula: =GOOGLETRANSLATE(text, source_language, target_language)

  • Text = the cell containing the foreign language.

  • source_language = the 2 country code for the language you need to translate e.g. German = de, French = fr, Spanish = es and so on.

  • target_language = the language you want to translate the text into e.g. English = en

6 - apply this to all rows and repeat for other columns.

This will automatically translate the foreign language into English.
