Running Qualitative Research in China with Indeemo
The Indeemo App is localised and supported in China. Indeemo has been used extensively for research in China over the years.
With consideration to China’s PIPL, we have compiled our learnings to help you on your research journey.
PIPL
China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) regulates how personal data from Chinese residents can be collected, stored, and transferred abroad. If you’re conducting qualitative research with Chinese respondents and using Indeemo, you need to do the following:
Ensure that respondents are aware that their data will be stored in the EU and that they consent to this transfer.
Only ask respondents to share what is relevant to your research study.
An SCC (standard contractual clause) is required from the Cyberspace Administration of China.
You (our customer) are the data controller so you are responsible for legal compliance under PIPL.
Information on the SCC process can be found here. The SCC document can be downloaded here.
Technical Implications
Android users
Please note that there is no Google Play Store in China, which means that Android users need to download the app directly via APK file.
When Android users in China register, they will be automatically redirected to where they can download this file.
Push notifications will not work on Android devices, but users can still receive in-app notifications and use the web version of Indemo if handset issues arise
iPhone Users
The Indeemo app will work seamlessly on iPhones.
The Indeemo App is fully localised in both Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. This means that all menus, buttons, and navigation elements within the app will automatically appear in the respondent’s chosen language.
Screen Recording
Ineemo’s built-in screen recording: Not supported in China.
Respondents can, however, use their phone’s system screen recording function and upload the resulting video directly into Indeemo.
